VMI Pro

Exceptional professional mentoring for previously published authors

  • Rolling, ad hoc entry
  • Carefully selected one-on-one pairing with an award-winning author
  • Flexibility that respects and responds to professional writers’ needs

Although an ever-increasing range of support is available for emerging writers, this is not necessarily the case for professional writers. Many authors who have been through the experience of writing a book know they have command of their craft but crave the structure, support and commitment of a working relationship with a mentor.

VMI mentoring for professional writers is for any author who has published at least one book who wants to:

  • change genres
  • prepare a work-in-progress for an expectant agent or publisher
  • navigate “second (or third or fourth) book jitters”
  • work with an experienced author as a creative sounding board
  • problem-solve a challenging or resistant manuscript-in-progress
  • receive intellectual support (reading lists, ideas, “contact” creativity coaching)
  • connect with a healthy writing community
  • move beyond misguided mentoring received as an emerging writer
  • discuss ethical issues or sensitive texts with an experienced veteran
  • refuel after a period of burnout (cultivate a positive attitude around the ups and downs about publishing, critical acclaim, awards, and grants; reorganize a daily working and writing schedule, etc.)

In VMI Pro, the mentor and mentee/author create their own schedule for using 25 hours of one-on-one mentoring. Because experienced authors are familiar with the ebb and flow of writing work (and may be working with an agent towards a specific timeline, for example) the mentor and mentee may negotiate the exact time frame for use of the allotted hours, which can last anywhere between three months and a year from the date of enrollment. Note that mentors may not be available for a full year and may specify a shorter time frame for the mentorship. Start dates are rolling throughout the year.

VMI Pro writers are welcome to join the monthly drop-in writing sessions held on Zoom with the cohort from the Six Month Intensive that take place from January to July. They are also welcome to read at the public event taking place in July of the year of their participation.
